Nam Kwong Natural Gas Company Limited expects to finish the laying of underground natural gas pipes in Taipa and Coloane this year, and provide natural gas to all users in the area, the company’s Deputy General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Zhong Jianxin said Wednesday.
Zhong made the remarks on the sidelines of a seminar about natural gas development in Macau, at the Macau Science Centre.
Concerning the laying of the underground pipes on the peninsula, Zhong said the process was relatively complicated and therefore would take longer to complete, adding that the pipes would probably only be operational in 2020.
Zhong said that the main underground pipes on the peninsula were planned to cover a total length of 34 kilometres, while some 10 kilometres had already been completed. He said that natural gas might be available in Areia Preta, Nape and Zape “soon”. However, the older parts of Macau such as the peninsula’s western section would have to wait for some time, Zhong said.
Zhong noted that while natural gas has been available to local households since 2013, the fuel is still new to many local residents. He added that as natural gas is considered eco-friendly and of high quality, it’s already well known in others places in the world.
