Macao Water Executive Director Nacky Kuan Sio Peng said on Wednesday that construction of the Seac Pai Van water treatment plant was slated to start in the middle of this year, adding that the facility is planned to be operational in 2019.

Kuan made the remarks while speaking to reporters prior to the water supply company’s Spring Festival media luncheon at Galaxy’s JW Mariott Hotel in Cotai.

Kuan said that the Seac Pai Van plant would raise Macau’s water supply from the current 390,000 cubic metres to 520,000 cubic metres, which would be enough to meet the city’s demand for tap water for the next 10 to 15 years. Kuan added that the first phase of the project was expected to have a 900 million pataca price tag.

According to Kuan, the city’s water consumption grew 2 percent last year when Macao Water’s revenue stood at about 60 million patacas, a 6-7 percent drop year-on-year.

The 2 percent water consumption growth came mainly from Taipa and Coloane, according to Kuan.

“Consumption went up about 7 percent in the outlaying islands, but this is mainly because of Cotai, which saw a double-digit growth in water consumption from he mega-entertainment venues”, Kuan concluded.
