The number of new registrations of motor vehicles dropped 31.7 per cent year-on-year to 10,078 in the first nine months of the year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Monday.

The number of new registrations of motorcycles fell 25.3 per cent to 5,785, while the number of new registrations of light automobiles decreased 41.9 per cent to 3,785 between January and September.

In September, the number of new registrations of motor vehicles fell 40.1 per cent year-on-year to 979.

The total number of licensed motor vehicles reached 249,013 at the end of September, up by 1.2 per cent year-on-year. Motorcycles and light automobiles accounted for 52.3 per cent and 44.6 per cent of the total number of motor vehicles.

A total of 1,119 traffic accidents were reported by the police in September, averaging 37 a day, involving 328 casualties.

In the first three quarters of the year, the number of traffic accidents dropped 6.4 per cent year-on-year to 11,000, resulting in 3,346 casualties, eight of them fatal.
