Newly-appointed Economic Services Bureau (DSE) Director Tai Kin Ip said on Tuesday his bureau would do more to boost “community-based economies” by providing support to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and improving the business environment.

Tai made the pledge after the swearing-in ceremony for his new post at the Bank of China Building in Nam Van.

Tai, who holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and two master’s degrees, one in governance and the other in European studies, was DSE vice director from 2009. He started working for the bureau in 1995.

Taking to reporters, Tai said the bureau would continue to provide the necessary assistance to local SMEs and young businesspeople, as well as promote e-commerce and community-based economies.

He also said officials of his bureau had visited several of the city’s districts and talked to the representatives of various business sectors.

“Each district has its own special features which need to be further developed… [regarding the different needs of each district] we will consider strengthening the promotion of some districts…or consider how to attract more visitors to these districts,” Tai said.
