The government is confident that Macau’s economy will show positive growth this year, Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On said on Wednesday.

“After going through a stage of economic adjustment over the last two years, we are confident that the economy will recover and show positive growth in 2017,” Chui said.

Chui also said he expected Macau to enjoy a fiscal surplus next year, pledging that the government will continue to manage its finances in a prudent manner.

Chui also said that housing, public transport and the environmental were the government’s top priorities, adding that the government was determined to further improve residents’ livelihood and develop Macau into a world tourism and leisure centre.

Underlining the central government’s raft of measures to support Macau and the success of the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, Chui said the measures and the forum had injected new impetus into the city’s economic diversification.

“Recently, the central government approved Macau to take part in the ‘One Belt,One Road Initiative’,” Chui said. “… [Macau] will strengthen its co-operation with the countries and regions, especially Guangdong and Fujian, along the ‘Belt and Road’.”
