A renewed call has been made for eased visa procedures for Vietnamese workers and tourists, according to a local media report.

Speaking at an event in Macao recently, Vietnamese consul Nguyen Tuan Anh appealed to Macao authorities to relax entry restrictions on Vietnamese, the Macau Daily Times says.

Non-resident Vietnamese workers currently make up Macao’s second largest foreign population of foreign workers after people from the Philippines, and number some 7,800.

Nguyen’s call follows a meeting in March between consul general Pham Binh Dam and Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng to discuss ways to grow tourism from Vietnam and increase the flow of Vietnamese workers to the SAR.

Last year, Pham proposed a greater influx of Vietnamese workers as the solution to Macao’s post-pandemic labour shortage.

Women, working as domestic helpers, make up almost four-fifths of Macao’s Vietnamese population. Most of the rest are employed by the gaming industry. Several hundred Vietnamese-born people also hold Macao ID cards.
