Consumer promotions have helped ailing businesses in the northern district

But merchants say more needs to be done to encourage shoppers to spend their patacas locally instead of on the Chinese mainland.

Businesses in Macao’s northern district are benefiting from government-run consumer promotions, according to the Federal General Commercial Association of Macau Small and Medium Enterprises.

The association’s director, Fong Kin Fu, told local media that more locals and tourists were heading to northern Macao to do their shopping as a result of the incentives on offer.

The Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) launched the scheme – which consists of discounts, vouchers and raffle prizes via digital payment platforms – on 18 March, in a bid to boost the district’s sparse footfall.

The 20-week promotion ends on 4 August. It reportedly attracted about 1,000 participants by its third week. However, northern district merchants have called for more to be done to maintain spending in their area.

Macao residents are increasingly turning to mainland cities within the Greater Bay Area to do their shopping – particularly during extended holidays and weekends – leading to a significant loss of business for local merchants.

Prices on the Chinese mainland are cheaper for items of the same or better quality than those available in Macao, and the choice is much greater. Dining and leisure attractions are more affordable too.
