The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is looking to boost the number of affluent Korean visitors to the city with a four-day Macao roadshow due to take place in Seoul between 30 May and 2 June.

According to an official statement, the event will be held in Shinsegae Department Store in the Gangnam district – one of the city’s most fashionable areas. The MGTO said that it hoped “to capture the interest of potential high-end international visitors for vacation and spending in Macao.”

The roadshow, which is based on the theme of “My Favourite Macao,” will showcase Macao’s tourism hotspots through large displays and will also offer promotional deals.

South Korea is currently Macao’s biggest international tourist market, with preliminary data showing that  around 192,000 South Koreans had visited the SAR this year as of 21 May. The figure marks a recovery of 52 percent compared to the level in 2019 – the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic put an effective brake on international travel.

The MGTO has been staging similar events in other key markets, including Tokyo, Jakarta and Singapore as Macao seeks to build up its international market base and reduce its reliance on the mainland Chinese gambling market.

Data from the MGTO indicates that Macao’s top visitor source market remains mainland China, which accounted for 70 percent of total visitor arrivals between January and April. South Korea made up only 1.5 percent of total arrivals during this period.
