Macao’s casinos generated a total gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 20.2 billion patacas (US$2.5 billion) in May, according to the latest figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (also referred to by its Portuguese initials DICJ).
It marks a month-on-month increase of roughly 8.9 percent, compared to the 18.5 billion patacas (US$2.3 billion) recorded in April. Year-on-year, the latest total represents an increase of nearly 30 percent compared to May 2023, which saw GGR of 15.5 billion patacas (US$1.9 billion).
This figure represents the highest GGR that has been recorded since the Covid-19 pandemic began in February 2020.

In early May, IAG reported that research platform Seaport raised its May Macao GGR forecast to 20 billion patacas, up 3.5 percent on prior estimates, citing a stronger Golden Week start.
Macao’s gaming industry is dominated by 30 casinos run by six concessionaires as of the current time.
In the first quarter of the year, data shows that baccarat was the clear leader, generating an overwhelming 85.4 percent of the region’s total gross gaming revenue. In stark contrast, roulette, the classic European casino game, accounted for only 0.4 percent of GGR during the same three-month period.
