Macao’s composite consumer price index (CPI) in April rose by just 0.23 percent year-on-year and 0.17 percent month-on-month, according to the latest figures from the Statistics and Census Service (known by its Portuguese initials DSEC).

The price indices for recreation, sport and culture, as well as miscellaneous goods and services (a category that includes everything from personal care products to insurance, and jewellery), saw the most year-on-year growth, going up by 2.47 percent and 1.82 percent respectively. The indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and housing and fuels grew by 0.48 percent and 0.21 percent respectively (the latter category driven by higher prices for rental accommodation, according to DSEC).

The price indices of information and communication, clothing and footwear and transport dropped by 3.01 percent, 2.35 percent and 1.67 percent, respectively, year-on-year.

Compared with March, the 2.6 percent jump in the price index of recreation, sport and culture was due to higher hotel room rates, DSEC said. The price indices of clothing and footwear (up 0.78 percent) and transport (up 0.42 percent) increased month-on-month on account of the arrival of new summer clothing and a pickup in airfares.

For the 12 months ending April 2025, the average CPI climbed by 0.42 percent when compared with the previous period. There were relatively large increases in the price indices of miscellaneous goods and services (up 2.47 percent), education (up 2.21 percent) and health (up 1.62 percent). The index of transport, meanwhile, fell by 3 percent.

The average CPI for the first four months of 2025 climbed by 0.17 percent year-on-year, with the price index of food and non-alcoholic beverages rising by 0.63 percent.
