Macao’s general unemployment rate last year stood at 3.7 per cent, up 0.8 per cent in 2021, while local residents’ jobless rate amounted to 4.8 per cent, up by 0.9 percentage points, the Statistics and Census Service has announced.
The general unemployment rate comprises local residents and non-resident workers (NRWs). Most NRWs are from the Chinese mainland, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal.
In November 2022, Macao had 154,648 NRWs, according to the Labour Affairs Bureau.
According to official figures, Macao’s total labour force stood at 458,400 in the fourth quarter of last year, including 85,000 who worked in Macao but lived outside the territory, mostly in Zhuhai. Local and non-local employees’ median monthly employment earnings fell by MOP 800 to MOP 15,000 last year, while local resident employees’ median monthly employment earnings dropped by MOP 1,000 to MOP 19,000.
In the fourth quarter, Macao’s general unemployment rate stood at 3.5 per cent, while local residents’ unemployment rate amounted to 4.5 per cent, decreasing by 0.5 and 0.7 percentage points respectively from the previous quarter.
At the end of the third quarter of 2022, Macao’s population stood at 671,900, The Macau Post Daily reported.
