Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On Monday briefed President Xi Jinping on Macau’s progress while the latter and other dignitaries toured one of the Macau exhibition areas at the 1st China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement.

According to the statement, the briefing happened after the expo’s opening ceremony yesterday morning, at the “Macao Hub” exhibition area, a section set up by the local government within the China Pavilion.

In the afternoon, Chui toured a second Macau-themed display area, organised by the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), at the Business Pavilion of the expo’s “Trade in Goods – Foods and Agricultural Products Zone”, according to the statement.

Chui and his entourage, which included Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac, visited several booths at the IPIM exhibition area, where they were briefed on the progress of the participating Macau enterprises and their products on display, as well as on other products made in Macau, according to the statement.

A third Macau-themed display at the expo has been jointly set up by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Cultural Industry Fund. The display is included in the expo’s “Trade in Services – Integrated Services Zone”, according to the statement.

“The aim of this display is to promote Macau’s function as a platform for trade and cooperation,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the “Macao Hub” exhibition area features photographs, articles, videos and multimedia materials to tell the story of how Macau developed from a fishing village in the 16th century to an international commercial centre.
The statement underlined that since its return to the motherland in 1999, Mac
au has been integrated into the central government’s national development plan. Thanks to the central government’s support, “Macau continues to play a role as an important gateway between China and the rest of the world,” the statement said.

The statement pointed out that Chui was an official guest at the CIIE inauguration and that he attended a welcoming dinner on Sunday evening during his two-day visit to Shanghai. Chui and his entourage returned to Macau Monday night, the statement said.

According to the statement, the deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau, Yao Jian, joined Chui’s delegation as a guest.
