SenseTime, a Chinese company specialising in Artificial Intelligence (AI), has opened an office in Macao and already inked agreements with several institutions in the city.

The company’s general manager for Hong Kong and Macao, Shang Hailong, said he wanted to set up the foundations for AI’s development throughout the Greater Bay Area. “We hope to work closely with different industries in Macao to boost economic diversification and co-create an innovative AI ecosystem,” he said.

In Macao, it has signed memorandums of understanding with Nam Kwong (Group) Company Limited, Kiang Wu Hospital, the University of Macau and Pui Ching Middle School.

SenseTime, which was founded in 2014, specialises in facial and image recognition. A recent media report indicated that SenseTime is attempting to employ AI in the surveillance system at Genting’s Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, allowing it to track customers through the resort, focus on the hands of dealers and check on gamblers’ winnings or identify blacklisted patrons.

SenseTime has not expressed any interest in developing any similar project in Macao’s casinos.
