Macau’s composite consumer price index (CPI) rose 5.3 percent year-on-year last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Monday.

A DSEC statement attributed the steep rise to rising residential rents and the higher cost of eating out, as well as higher charges for package tours during the Chinese New Year holiday.

According to the statement, last month recorded notable increases in the price indices of housing and fuels (+10.70 percent), recreation and culture (+9.49 percent) and health (+5.64 percent).

The composite CPI for February rose 0.90 percent month-to-month.
For the 12 months ended last month, the average composite CPI increased 5.88 percent from the previous period.

The average composite CPI for the first two months of the year grew 5.03 percent year-on-year.
