Macau posted a trade deficit of 57 890 billion patacas (US$7.2 billion) from January to September, which was a year on year increase of 12 percent, the region’s Statistics and Census Bureau reported.
In the first nine months of the year, Macau exported goods worth 7.29 billion patacas, up 8 percent from the same period of 2013 but imported goods totalling 65.18 billion patacas, or 12 percent more than in the same period of last year.
In the first three quarters of 2014 the value of exports to Hong Kong (4.30 billion patacas) and the European Union (218 million patacas) increased by 20 percent and 5 percent, respectively, compared with the same period of last year while the values exported to mainland China (1.13 billion patacas) and the United States (241 million patacas) fell 7 percent and 11 percent, respectively.
In the same period Macau imported goods worth 21.14 billion patacas and 16.48 billion patacas of goods from mainland China and the EU, respectively, or 10 percent and 22 percent more year n year, respectively.
Of total imports 41.61 billion patacas were consumer goods, including 8.54 billion patacas were food and beverages and 6.10 billion patacas were wristwatches, which increased 23 percent and 42 percent, respectively.
In September, Macau posted a trade deficit of 7.10 billion patacas, arising from exports worth 762 million patacas and imports of 7.86 billion patacas.
