Hong Kong politician Kenneth Fok has told the National People’s Congress (NPC) that Macao, Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) should put in a bid to co-host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2031, the South China Morning Post reports.

Fok – a legislator who represents Hong Kong’s sporting sector – said in his submission that the 2025 National Games, which are being jointly hosted by Macao, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, would give the region experience in hosting such a large-scale sporting event.

“We have enough facilities in [Hong Kong’s] Kai Tak Sports Park and Guangzhou Nansha Urban Sports Complex to meet the needs of competition,” Fok told the NPC.

The Post noted that Macao’s Olympic Sports Centre would “almost certainly need significant improvement to be brought up to standard,” however.

According to Folk’s submission, it made more sense to focus on the Women’s World Cup than the Men’s – due to FIFA’s rotation policy (the 2034 Men’s World Cup is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia).

China hosted the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991 and hosted it a second time in 2007.
