Macao’s top figure skaters have a chance to shine at the 14th National Winter Games (NWG), which opened over the weekend in Inner Mongolia.

The SAR’s representatives will compete in freestyle skating and short skating events, according to a statement from the Sports Bureau.

The competitions are scheduled to take place on 24 and 26 February, respectively, at the Inner Mongolia Ice Sports Training Centre in Hulunbuir.

An opening ceremony was held at the centre over the weekend, with some 35 teams attending from around the country.

More than 3,000 athletes will battle it out in dozens of events, the Macau Post Daily reports, including skating, skiing, ice hockey, curling and bobsleighing.

The current games will run until 27 February and are organised by the General Administration of Sport of China. They were originally due to take place in 2020 but were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
