Registrations are now open for Macao’s first annual “music camp,” a six-day event promising one-on-one instruction from world-renowned musicians from a UK-based orchestra in August. Local and foreign children born between 2006 and 2016, and currently learning to play a string instrument, are eligible to sign up.

The event is a new collaboration between the Cultural Affairs Bureau (known by its Portuguese initials IC), the Macao Orchestra Company, London’s Academy of St Martin in the Fields Orchestra (ASMF) and Wynn Resorts.

During the camp, participants will form their own string orchestra and rehearse with professional musicians from ASMF. Outstanding violinists will have the opportunity to perform with ASMF’s Grammy Award-winning music director, the American violinist Joshua Bell, IC revealed in a statement yesterday.

Camp dates run from 16 to 21 August. “On the last day of the music camp, the string orchestra will present a public performance,” the bureau said.

There are 40 places available and applicants must submit a video of themselves playing their string instrument (such as a violin, viola, cello or double bass). The fee for local musicians is 2,000 patacas and 10,000 patacas for others. Accommodation is available for an additional 10,000 patacas.

More information, including detailed registration instructions, can be found on the music camp webpage. Registrations close on 12 July.
