A major exhibition of China Coast art is being held at the Macao Museum of Art (known by its Portuguese initials MAM) from 10 May until 15 September.
Entitled Focus: Integration of Art between China and the West in the 18th-19th Centuries, the show is timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of George Chinnery’s birth, and features a large number of works by the artist, who was closely connected to Macao. A number of them are being displayed in the city for the first time.
Other works will highlight what the organisers describe as “the visual dialogue and integration between China and the West, brought about by Chinese and foreign artists in the Pearl River Delta area” at the time.

Work includes oil paintings, watercolours, gouache, sketches and printmaking, giving an overview of the integration and adaptation of Chinese and Western painting materials.
Various outreach activities will also be launched during the exhibition period, including special guided tours, a lecture series, workshops and concerts, as well as a tour, “Strolling the Streets of Macao in Chinnery’s Paintings.”
MAM is open from 10 am to 7 pm (last admissions at 6:30 pm) every day except Monday. Admission is free. For more information about the exhibition, visit the MAM website.
