The 2022 Galaxy Entertainment Macao International Marathon will be held on Sunday 4 December, with 12,000 available places – 1,400 for the main marathon, 4,800 for the half-marathon and 5,800 for the mini-marathon.

Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun said that an online registration system will open on 8 October for the marathon and half-marathon, and on 9 October for the mini-marathon.

The event is jointly organised by the Sports Bureau and the General Association of Athletics of Macao with Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) as the title sponsor.

Pun said that in order to give “full play” to the “synergistic” effect of sports events in Macao and to promote the development of the sports and tourism sector, this year’s event will cooperate with GEG and mainland China’s comprehensive tourism service platform Fliggy to offer discounted hotel packages to the participants who register for the race, so as to attract more tourists from mainland China to take part in the event.

He added that the event organisers would continue to cooperate with Macao’s cultural and creative sectors to launch marathon-themed cultural and creative products, while a number of peripheral activities would also be held to enhance the diversity of the event and to demonstrate the social benefits of major sporting events.

In accordance with the Health Bureau’s (SSM) pandemic control and prevention measures, the statement underlined, all participants will be required to have completed two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the race. Participants will also be required to present proof of a valid negative Covid-19 nucleic acid test result before taking part in the race.

Pun added that the organisation of the Macao International Marathon was proceeding in “an orderly manner”. As for the participants, he said, apart from well-known local runners, the bureau would also consider inviting renowned runners from mainland China to compete in this year’s event.

Pun also noted that Macao welcomes runners from all over the world, whether they are from Hong Kong or other regions and countries, noting that anyone who complies with the SSM’s Covid-19 prevention and control measures can compete in the event, The Macau Post Daily reported.
