Macao’s hamster population has been given the all-clear by Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) inspectors who carried out nucleic acid tests (NAT) at local pet shops yesterday.

The IAM launched the emergency hamster NAT drive after Hong Kong detected the novel coronavirus in many hamsters in a pet shop. All the hamsters in Macao tested negative for Covid-19. The IAM added that no hamsters had been imported to Macao by retail shops since last year.

The bureau pointed out that it will monitor the development of Covid-19 and will abide by the Health Bureau (SSM) prevention and control measures.

The IAM urged pet owners to pay attention to personal and their pets’ hygiene. The bureau also stressed that residents should not listen to rumours and abandon their pets.
