Starting 1 January 2022, the importation and transit of disposable non-biodegradable plastic straws and stirrers for beverages will be prohibited.

The decision was announced today in an executive order signed by the Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and published in the Official Gazette.

Over the past years, the government has implemented a series of measures to combat the use of non-biodegradable material, which is highly harmful to the environment.

The most recent measures include the ban on the import and trading of disposable polystyrene takeaway boxes, bowls, cups and dishes from 1 January 2021 and the implementation of a plastic carrier bag levy scheme from 18 November 2020 onwards.
