The private Macau Anglican College (MAC) in Taipa announced Monday that it will suspend its classes today and tomorrow, in the wake of the illegal removal of asbestos roof sheeting at a site opposite the school.
The Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) jointly said in a statement that the latter received complaints on January 19 about the removal of roof sheeting that might contain asbestos.
According to the statement, after receiving the complaints, the two bureaus discovered that the removal of the asbestos roof sheeting had been carried out without the permission by the authorities. The two bureaus then ordered the suspension of the removal work.
Due to parents’ fears about possible asbestos fibres in the air in the area, the school management announced that classes will be suspended today and tomorrow.
The school also said that it had hired a cleaning company to carry out pressure cleaning in all open areas of the school.
The school also said that all doors and windows will be kept closed for the rest of the week, adding that it had also asked a company to assess the air quality around the school and expected to receive the findings of the assessment tomorrow.
