The Inner Harbour pumping station project will have a major impact on traffic on the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro during the first half of 2024, though exact dates have not yet been specified, the Macau Daily Times reports.

The Public Works Bureau has completed the northern phase of the project, designed to mitigate the storm surges that are a perennial hazard of Macao’s low-lying areas during severe weather.

Construction for the southern phase is underway, and is set to reach the Inner Harbour end of the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro – also popularly called by its Cantonese name San Ma Lo – from early next year.

Roads will be altered or blocked off, according to Public Works Director Lam Wai Hou, who acknowledged that the project was currently affecting about one third of the area’s traffic.

Earlier this year, Macao’s Commission of Audit criticised officials for their poor cooperation on the project.

In the wake of the dressing down, the Public Works Bureau pledged to improve “interdepartmental communication and coordination to prudently fulfil its duties,” and said it was updating its protocols.
