At a ceremony yesterday, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said the soft-opening of Macao’s Islands District Medical Complex marked “a new chapter and a new milestone” for the city.
He also disclosed that the complex, which is being operated by Beijing’s Peking Union Medical College Hospital, would be known by a new name – the Macao Union Hospital.
According to a statement from the Government Information Bureau, Ho said that the hospital had three priorities, the first of which was to provide high-quality, wide-ranging healthcare to Macao residents as a public medical institution.

The second was to become “an internationally-influential first-class medical centre” in the Greater Bay Area. Finally, the new hospital would provide high-level and diverse training opportunities for local medical professionals.
The hospital will reportedly use a three-tier tariff system, the Macau Daily Times reports.
The first tier will offer free services to eligible local residents who have been referred by the Health Bureau (SSM), while the second provides discounted services to SSM referrals. The third tier is for private medical treatment, though discounts may be available for locals.
When the Macao Union Hospital is fully open, it will be the largest medical facility in Macao with around 800 beds in the primary facility alone. An adjacent 300-bed rehabilitation hospital is scheduled to open in 2026.
