Gross gaming revenue (GGR) at Macao’s casinos last month increased by 365.9 percent year-on-year from 3.34 billion patacas to 15.56 billion patacas, according to the latest figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

The May total was up from the GGR in April, which stood at 14.72 billion patacas. Accumulated revenue stood at 64.92 billion patacas, up 172.9 percent year-on-year.

GGR remains lower than pre-pandemic totals. From 2017 until the pandemic, the monthly figure generally stood above 20 billion patacas.

Analysts say Macao is capable of generating GGR of 168 billion patacas this year –  comfortably more than the government target of 130 billion.

Earlier this month, the Financial Services Bureau said gaming generated more than 10.1 billion patacas in taxes in the first quarter of this year.

The sum is nearly a fifth of the 50.9 billion patacas the government hopes to collect in 2023.
