Institutions from Macao and Shanghai have established a joint research platform to drive the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, China Daily reports. Called the China Macao-Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Translational Medicine Center, the hub’s newly inaugurated Macao outpost is part of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Initiated by the MUST Foundation, the project involves the Macao Translational Medicine Center, the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, and the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing Center of Excellence. Strategic partnerships include the major academic publishing company Springer Nature Group.
The Macao Translational Medicine Center’s director of administration, Hsiang Mei Su, has said that the new Macao-Shanghai centre would harness both cities’ strengths in healthcare. “While Shanghai drives innovation through its AI capabilities, Macao serves as a bridge connecting domestic and international resources while gathering cutting-edge medical research findings,” he noted.

According to He Yao, director of the Macao Translational Medicine Center, the new centre will “catalyse the translation of biomedical research into clinical applications and help overcome development challenges in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).”
He said that its operations should have a positive impact on the SAR’s economic diversification efforts, namely in the emerging Big Health sector.
China Macao-Shanghai AI Translational Medicine Center reportedly plans to build an international demonstration platform for AI-integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and to further develop TCM standardisation protocols. It also aims to leverage Macao’s connections with Portuguese-speaking countries to promote TCM overseas.
