Macau’s four hospital with a total of 1,366 beds recorded 51,000 in-patients last year, an increase of 4.8 percent from 2012, the Statistics and census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

In-patients aged 65 and over accounted for 21.5 percent of the total number of patients. In 2012, residents aged 65 and over accounted for 7.7 percent of the population, according to the latest available DSEC data.

Hospitals’ occupancy rate of in-patient beds rose 3.6 percentage points to 73.2 percent.

Last year, the city hospitals provided 1.44 million out-patient consultations, up 5.3 percent year-on-year. The number of dialysis treatments increased 10.6 percent to 71,000, the fourth consecutive year of double-digit growth.

Emergency service attendances rose 3.6 percent to 445,000.

At the end of last year, the city had 720 primary health care entities, comprising public health centres and private clinics.

The total number of consultations increased 11.6 percent to 3.79 million, including 1.17 million consultations in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), 1.09 million in general practice and 699,000 in other health services such as child health care.
