Macao’s compact size combined with its copious attractions have earned it a slot on SkyScanner’s list of “Top 9 walkable cities in Asia,” the air travel aggregator announced last week. The SAR was the only Chinese city to make the list.
To determine its “walkability index,” SkyScanner assessed cities based on 14 criteria, including total area, the number of attractions and the time it takes to stroll between them, crime rates, hilliness, population density and pollution, among others.
Macao made the list for having “city limits of less than 10 square kilometres and 517 attractions.”

Japan’s Nagasaki was crowned the most walkable city in Asia, followed by Hiroshima, also in Japan. Then came Cambodia’s Siem Reap (home to the famed Angkor Wat). The other five cities are Sendai, Japan; Haiphong, Vietnam; Panglao, Philippines; Thiruvananthapuram, India; and Coimbatore, India.
Nagasaki and Hiroshima also made SkyScanner’s list of “Top 10 walkable cities in the world,” in second and third place, respectively. Cordoba, in the heart of Spain’s Andalusia, ranked the highest. Five of the remaining seven most walkable cities were in Europe.
Macao got a second mention in SkyScanner’s list of “Top 10 most accessible cities” in the world – which may surprise some of its own wheelchair users, who recently told Macao News about challenges they faced when navigating the city.
