Macau’s balance of trade deficit from January to April showed a 23.9 per cent year-on-year decrease to 19.331 billion patacas (US$2.416 million), reported the Statistics and Census Bureau.
The data available on the Bureau’s website shows that the trade deficit in the same period of 2015 amounted to 25.451 billion patacas.
The deficit registered in the first four months of the year was due to exports totalling 3.453 billion, a year on year drop of 5.6 per cent and imports of 22.784 billion patacas (- 21.6 per cent).
In the period under analysis Macau imported fewer consumer goods such as watches (-37.1 per cent), passenger cars and motorcycles (-52.1 per cent), fuels and lubricants (-16.1 per cent), mobile phones (- 54.7 per cent) and building materials (-37.1 per cent).
By origin, imports from mainland China fell 24.6 per cent to 8.23 billion patacas and from the European Union fell 19.9 per cent to 5.42 billion patacas.
In April, the trade deficit stood at 4.817 billion patacas, a year on year decrease of 18.7 per cent, with exports falling 20.9 per cent to 755 million patacas and imports falling 18.6 per cent to 5.573 billion patacas.
