The mercury is expected to plummet on Chinese New Year’s Eve, which falls on 9 February this year, according to a dispatch released by the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (also known by its Portuguese acronym SMG).

The bureau says a cold front will reach Guangdong Province today, with a rapid plunge in temperatures between Wednesday and Friday, which will see a minimum of 10°C.

Coupled with the effects of a winter monsoon, the weather over the next two days is expected to be cloudy and rainy, with strong easterly winds.

Chilly weather is expected throughout the Greater Bay Area, with the Hong Kong Observatory forecasting temperatures between 11°C  to 15°C on 9 February. Meanwhile, Guangzhou could see the city reach a low of 9°C this Friday.

Macao recorded its lowest temperature this winter when the Taipa Grande Observatory recorded a reading of 4.3°C.

In spite of the anticipated temperature drop, the SMG published a report last week with modelling data that indicates that the number of hot days in the city is projected to more than double by the middle of this century owing to climate change.
