MGM Macau has announced it is switching to natural gas to power its entire suite of venues. The move will make it Macao’s first integrated resort to fully rely on the world’s most environmentally friendly fossil fuel for electricity.
In a statement, the casino operator said it expected the transition to result in annual reductions of “over 550 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent” – bringing the same benefit to the planet as planting 24,000 trees.
“Such a changeover also makes MGM Macau the first integrated resort operator to adopt clean and low-carbon natural gas across all its properties, achieving great strides in the green energy operation,” the statement read.

The company also noted it would keep exploring other green energy sources, such as solar power, and was looking into the feasibility of electrifying its shuttle bus fleet.
MGM president Kenneth Fong said switching to natural gas enabled MGM to “drive solid contributions to the green transformation of Macao’s energy structure.”
The Macao government is aiming for the city to reach its carbon peak by 2030 and achieve near-zero emissions before 2050 – in alignment with the national decarbonisation strategy.
