Former National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) vice-chairman Ma Man Kei’s remains will return from Beijing by plane to Macau today and a public memorial service will take place from 9 a.m. at Macau Forum in Zape on Sunday.

A special committee has meanwhile been set up to handle Ma’s funeral arrangements.

Born in Guangzhou in 1919, Ma moved to Macau in 1941 where he set up several businesses and charity organisations. He passed away in Beijing on Monday, aged 95.

The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau, the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) yesterday each offered their “profound condolences” to Ma’s family.

The letters of condolence described Ma as a well-known patriot and a close friend of the Communist Party of China (CPC) who will always be respected and greatly missed.

The three statements separately praised Ma for his active involvement in the anti-Kuomintang (KMT) War of Liberation, his contribution to economic development in the New China and his support for the development of reform and modernisation.

The statements also underlined Ma’s great effort in implementing the “One Country, Two Systems” principle after the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) in 1999 and the significant contribution he made to maintain Macau’s prosperity and stability.(macaunews/macaupost)
