Macau’s airport recorded 4 million passengers in the first half of the year, a year-on-year growth of 20 percent, Ma Iao Hang, chairman of the board of directors of the Macau International Airport Company (CAM) has announced.
Ma also said that the number of flight movements rose 12 percent to over 31,000 touch-downs and take-offs in the six-month period, when cargo movement increased 9.32 percent to 18,900 tonnes.
According to Ma, the number of flight movements by business jets reached 1,522 in the six-month period, up 5.87 percent year on year.
Ma revealed the figures during the company’s 2018 first-half review meeting at the CAM Office Building last Friday.
According to a CAM statement received by The Macau Post Daily Tuesday, the review meeting was headed by Deng Jun, chairman of the company’s executive committee.
The statement pointed out that the “current economic situation is complex and changing fast,” adding that the airport “faces a range of opportunities and challenges.”
According to the statement, four new routes – Moscow, Tuguegarao in the northern Philippines, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, and Phuket – increased the airport’s total number of routes to 49, operated by 29 airlines, in the first half of the year.
“The performance of the first half of 2018 was remarkable,” the statement said, predicting that the number of passengers will exceed 8 million this year. It also forecast a cargo movement of 39,000 tonnes.
In the statement, CAM also pledged to support the development of the central government’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) conurbation project comprising Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.
