Hong Kong-listed Amax International Holdings said in a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange yesterday that reported claims by junket operator Suncity that it was now controlling the mothballed Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel in Taipa are “untrue”.
The Hong Kong and Macau media reports, including by the Portuguese-language Jornal Tribuna de Macau, said that Suncity boss Alvin Chau Cheok Wa had “confirmed” that he was the new owner of the hotel, formerly known as New Century Hotel, and that he was planning to reapply for the hotel licence and redevelop the hotel.
The hotel, which lost its licence in 2016 due to alleged irregularities, included the Greek Mythology Casino.
The Amax statement said that according to an order issued by the Court of First Instance (TJB) dated May 17, Victory Success Holdings Limited, controlled by Chau, “has invaded the hotel property and ordered them [Chau’s company] to leave the hotel and return it to the hotel management within 5 calendar days.”
Amax is chaired by well-known businessman Ng Man Sun who was reportedly attacked by a gang of thugs at the hotel several years ago.
