Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong has advanced to the final round of the Australian Open men’s qualifying draw after defeating Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz in the second round in Melbourne.

The 21-year-old is currently ranked world No. 132, close to his career high, after climbing the ATP rankings following his recent run at the Hong Kong Open.

Wong prevailed 7-6, 6-0 to book his spot in the decisive qualifying match that will determine entry into the Australian Open main draw.

His next opponent has yet to be decided, with the winner of the match between Emil Møller and Elias Ymer set to face the Hong Kong player in the final qualifying round.

Wong reached the second round by beating France’s Ugo Blanchet 6-3, 7-6 earlier in the week, carrying momentum from his run to the quarter-finals at the Hong Kong Open.

Before the Australian Open, Wong also spent time training with top players, including Casper Ruud, and at the Rafa Nadal Academy, experiences he said have helped his confidence.

The Hong Kong player is now one match away from qualifying for his first Australian Open main draw and continuing his rise on the ATP tour.
