Macao’s 120 hotels recorded 390,000 guests in August, a year-on-year decline of 10.4 per cent.

The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said that mainland Chinese (263,000) and staycationers (104,000) accounted for 67.4 per cent and 26.6 per cent of all hotel guests in August.

Guests’ average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.8 nights, while the average occupancy rate dropped 2 percentage points year-on-year to 36.4 per cent

In the first eight months of the year, the number of guests decreased 26.5 per cent to 3.31 million.

Macao’s tourism industry has been devastated by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic measures on the local economy. Prior to the pandemic, hotel occupancy rates were consistently above 80 per cent, with the last good month being January 2020 with a reported 81 per cent occupancy rate.
