Kiang Wu Hospital no longer has beds for Covid-19 patients at a time when Macao’s current outbreak has peaked although more serious cases have started to increase.

Hospital Deputy Director Li Peng Bin said that despite the decrease in the number of patients in the private hospital’s emergency room, the number of serious cases has increased in recent days, with young and old people experiencing more serious symptoms, chiefly shortness of breath, TDM reported.

“The emergency room at the hospital is treating roughly 600 patients a day, which is twice as many as a few weeks ago. However, the operation of a hotline [for Covid-19 cases] has relieved the pressure on hospital staff and reduced the number of patients in the emergency room,” said local doctor Ieng Kam Tou.

Doctor Lei Man Chon told TDM that most of the medical staff infected with Covid-19 who have not yet fully recovered have asked to return to work to help their colleagues in fighting the epidemic.

“Many were on sick leave for two or three days when they were suffering from Covid but asked to return to work again when the fever subsided and when they started to feel better,” said Lei.

Kam Kun Chong, a surgeon, said that surgeries were not affected since the staff in this sector took medication in a timely manner and managed to avoid being seriously affected.

Kiang Wu Hospital officials said they will reinforce the treatment of the elderly, as this is the most vulnerable group at the moment.

With the hospital completely full, officials appealed to people with Covid-19 to first take the medicines provided by the government and to only go to the hospital if their health situations do not improve.
