Girl, woman suffer carbon monoxide poisoning when showering

15-year-old girl and 32-year-old woman suffered accidental carbon monoxide poisoning on separate occasions, one on Sunday and one on New Year’s Day.

A 15-year-old girl suffered accidental carbon monoxide poisoning when showering in her flat in Areia Preta district on Sunday, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement.

The girl felt dizzy when taking a shower in the bathroom in her flat in Fei Lung Court of the Long Yuen residential estate in Avenida de Venceslau de Morais.

The girl was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital. There was no follow-up information by the authorities on her condition.

Firefighters equipped with gas detectors went to the flat for examination. They detected carbon monoxide, with the gas detectors reading an amount of 10 PPM (parts per million) in the bathroom, where an LPG water heater is installed.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old woman suffered accidental carbon monoxide poisoning when showering in her flat in the Avenida de Horta e Costa neighbourhood on New Year’s Day, the bureau said in a statement that day.

The woman suffered spasms when taking a shower in the bathroom in her flat in Lei Ka Building in Rua de Pedro Coutinho.

The woman was taken by paramedics to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital. There was no follow-up information by the authorities on her condition.

Firefighters equipped with gas detectors went to the flat for examination. They detected carbon monoxide, with the gas detectors reading an amount of 41 PPM (parts per million), in the kitchen, where an LPG water heater, not equipped with an exhaust pipe, is installed.
