About 1,000 roadwork projects will be carried out from next year, Transport Bureau (DSAT) Director Lam Hin San announced on Monday during a press conference at the bureau.
Lam said the government’s interdepartmental Road Projects Co-ordination Group, which was established in 2009, has received 711 applications for roadwork permits from government entities and public utilities to be carried out next year.
Lam said the government expected that about 1,000 roadwork projects will be carried out next year. The number includes 711 construction projects for government departments and institutions, as well as urgent maintenance for private development projects.
According to Macau Business, due to the significant number of construction projects, the Road Construction Co-ordination Group has introduced schemes to reduce the traffic issues and inconveniences created during construction periods, including raising the licensing fees to operate excavation and construction works, in order to reduce the construction space and time.
In order to encourage the completion of construction projects within the shortest period of time, the co-ordination group has introduced a reward and punishment mechanism for road construction. The group is encouraging the government and special institutions to increase penalties on companies who fail to finish construction projects before deadlines, and to increase rewards for those who complete projects early.
The schemes also include road classifications, with the highest classified roads allowing nighttime construction, extending daily construction times or continuing construction on Sundays and mandatory holidays according to the nature of the construction, so as to reduce the time required for the construction works.
