Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said today that the advantages of Portuguese and English journalism are increasingly relevant in Macao.

“Their efforts were crucial to enhancing understanding about Macao and China across the world,” said Ho at a Lunar New Year lunch with the media.

“In recent years, the importance of the Portuguese and English-language media in Macao have gradually become more evident. Many overseas Macao citizens and foreigners who care about Macao regularly receive information about Macao, and learn about the development of China, through the news platforms of the Portuguese and English-language media,” Ho said.

The chief executive thanked local Portuguese- and English-language media for their contributions to conveying the Macao government’s pandemic prevention and control information in a timely manner.

As a result, the Macao government was able to get a better grasp of the needs and expectations of various parts of the population and groups within the community.

The chief executive also said that the government hopes that the Portuguese- and English-language media can continue to leverage their advantages, establish a foothold in Macao’s multilingual and multicultural environment and help the “world to get to know Macao and China more and better”.

He also said he hoped media would play a role in helping Macao as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and the “Belt and Road” initiative.
