Macau, China, 16 Jun – The former and last governor of Macau, Vasco da Rocha Vieira, said on Monday that Portugal forgot and neglected the territory that was under Portuguese administration for 450 years, according with the Portuguese News Agency Lusa.
General Rocha Vieira, who governed Macau until 19 December, 1999, said that Macau has been forgotten by Portugal, which has, for this reason, missed out on many opportunities.
The last governor of Macau said that Portugal, by spending time on duties with Europe, Africa and Brazil, has “forgotten and neglected Macau”.
“This is not good because Macau is expected to play an extremely important role in the link between China and the Portuguese-speaking world and the European Union and in the strengthening of the good relations between Portugal and China, which should not only be limited to a friendship,” he said.
The former governor also said that “Portugal is missing out on opportunities that it should not miss out on”.
The last Portuguese governor of Macau added that he would like Portugal to be watchful of the “future” and to keep an eye on opportunities that it could still take advantage of.”
“There is a lot that has been missed, but there is still a lot that could be taken advantage of,” he said.
Rocha Vieira, who was invited to Macau by the Chinese authorities, heads to Beijing on Wednesday.
