Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On expressed on Sunday his deep sorrow over the passing of former Portuguese president Mário Soares.
Soares died in Lisbon on Saturday, aged 92.
According to a statement by his office, Chui also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the late leader’s bereaved family.
The statement described Soares as an “excellent leader” who had close ties with Macau which he visited several times.
The statement also said that Soares had given a great impetus to Sino-Portuguese talks on the Macau question.
Chui said that his “absence will be deeply felt”.
