Zhuhai, China, 29 Apr – Officials from Macau and from the neighbouring Chinese municipality of Zhuhai said on Tuesday that they created three working groups aimed at strengthening cooperation between these two regions.
The announcement was made during the first meeting of the Zhuhai-Macau Specialised Cooperation Task Force, in Zhuhai. Some topics of the topics discussed, among others, at this meeting include issues linked to infrastructure, simplifying procedures at border posts, industrial cooperation and providing integrated services.
The three working groups, which are part of the Zhuhai-Macau Specialised Cooperation Task Force, are going to study improving cooperation to transform the Zhuhai-Macau Cross-Border Industrial Park, as well as work together on urban planning and cross-border transportation between Zhuhai and Macau.
Both sides were represented at the meeting by Chen Honghui, deputy mayor of Zhuhai and Lau Si Io, Macau secretary for Transport and Public Works. Both officials said there is a lot of room for development and cooperation between Zhuhai and Macau, taking into account Zhuhai’s strategic position as the main city on the western side of the Pearl River, and Macau as an internationally-rated centre for tourism and leisure.
According to a statement released in Macau, both officials agree that “to face the financial crisis, Zhuhai and Macau should strengthen economic and industrial cooperation to support the diversification of Macau”.
The “Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta” recently approved by the Chinese government mentions strengthening cooperation in the region with the aim of developing in an integrated fashion, taking advantage of the specific characteristics of each of the areas of the Pearl River Delta.
