Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Director Fu Ziying said Monday that Macau was a role model for the protection of national security.
Fu made the remarks in a speech during the opening ceremony of the “National Security Education Exhibition” at the Macau Handover Gifts Museum in Nape.
Following the first exhibition last year, this year is the second time that Macau is hosting the “National Security Education Exhibition” which aims to increase residents’ awareness of the protection of national security.
The exhibition, which will end on May 15, is jointly hosted by the local government and the liaison office.
In his speech, Fu noted that yesterday was the country’s 4th National Security Education Day.
The National Security Education Day on April 15 is stipulated by the country’s National Security Law, which was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) in July 2015. The previous National Security Law, which took effect in 1993, was abolished in 2014 when the country’s Counterespionage Law was promulgated.
Therefore, April 15, 2016 was the country’s 1st National Security Education Day.
Fu said that the hosting of the “National Security Education Exhibition” aimed to remind “everyone” not to forget the country’s history, to bear in mind their shared mission to safeguard national security and social stability, and to make their contribution to the realisation of the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation.
Fu underlined that the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) is an inalienable part of the country and that both the nation’s Constitution and the country’s National Security Law stipulate that every Chinese citizen including those in Hong Kong and Macau has the responsibility and duty to safeguard national security.
Fu acknowledged that Macau enacted the local national security law – the Law on the Defence of National Security (based on Article 23 of the Macau Basic Law) – in 2009 and hosted the “National Security Education Exhibition” for the first time last year.
Fu also said that the local government also established the Commission on the Defence of National Security of the Macau Special Administrative Region in October last year. Fu said that all this showed that concerning the protection of national security, the local government has always adopted the stance that even though it operates under “two systems”, it only has responsibility to the “one country”.
Fu also said that the local government has built up good examples and role models for the protection of national security based on the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
Also delivering a speech at the event, Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On noted that last year’s “National Security Education Exhibition” recorded over 18,000 visits and that the webpage of last year’s exhibition recorded over 200,000 visits. Based on last year’s successful experience, the local government and the liaison office decided again to co-organise this year’s exhibition, he said.
Chui also said that national security was not only a political issue but also an issue related to the life of the population. Since the city’s return to the motherland in 1999, the local government has always adopted an important political principle, which is to ensure national security, regional stability and residents’ well-being, he said.
Chui pledged that the local government will continue to improve the official mechanism and the local legal system to safeguard national security, and tell the “Macau story” well on safeguarding national security.(Macaunews)
