A briefing session was held yesterday to explain the selection procedure for the election committee that will select Macao’s next Chief Executive (CE). The body consists of 400 members, the vast majority of whom are elected representatives from different sectors of Macao.

According to a government statement, roughly 320 people attended the seminar, which covered content relating to the appointment of voters, the signing of nomination forms, the exercise of nomination and voting rights and the new requirements of the updated CE election law.

During the briefing, the chairperson of the election administrative committee, Song Man Lei, reiterated that the polling date for the members of the CE Election Committee will fall on 11 August, adding that ballots will be cast across three voting stations between 9 am and 6 pm.

Both the polling times and number of venues remain unchanged from the 2019 CE Election Committee election, with the chairperson stating that officials have not yet considered setting up a polling station in Taipa or Coloane.

“We would like to maintain the three same venues as the last election,” Song said to local media. “Macao Polytechnic University, Macao Forum and Escola Luso-Chinesa Técnico-Profissional are basically the three places we would like to continue using.”

In response to a question about lifting the voting rates, Song said that there are currently over 770 eligible voters and that the authorities hope to attract more through advertising and increasing the transparency of the process.

She also noted that a handbook with further details concerning the August election had been published.

No announcements have been made yet regarding the date of the CE election, although it is expected to be held in October at the earliest. The incumbent, Ho Iat Seng, has also not given any indication as to whether or not he intends to run for reelection.
