Macao must resolutely defend national sovereignty, security and development interests, Fu Ziying, director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macao, said at a Chinese New Year cocktail reception hosted by his office on Monday.

“Without national security, there will be no regional security, nor will there be a harmonious and peaceful life for residents,” Fu said in his speech at the Services Platform Complex for Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in Nam Van.

“I hope that everyone will coordinate development and security, adhere to the bottom line of the ‘One Country’ principle … and resolutely resist all words and deeds that endanger the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests,” Fu, the highest-ranking central government official posted to Macao, said.

Fu also said that “Macao’s fight against the epidemic must not be relaxed,” adding the novel coronavirus “is still spreading around the world, and its impact on the economy and society continues.”

According to Fu, “the tasks of stabilising the economy, ensuring employment and caring for people’s livelihoods are still arduous.” However, Fu was quick to add that “difficulties breed hope, and confidence is as precious as gold.”

Fu also said: “I firmly believe that with the care and support of President Xi Jinping and the central government, the great motherland as a strong backing, the system advantages of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, the solid foundation laid in the 21 years since the return to the motherland, and the fine traditions of patriotism, love of Macao and pragmatism from all walks of life, as long as we strengthen our confidence and work hard together, we will be able to usher in a better tomorrow.”

3 suggestions to achieve Macao’s better development

Fu also said he hoped that in the new year all sectors of Macao’s civil society will earnestly implement the spirit of the important speeches that President Xi Jinping made during his inspection visit to Macao in December 2019, support the Macao government in governing according to the law, grasp the new historical stance, seize new opportunities for development and achieve better development of Macao.

Concerning Macao’s better development, Fu made three suggestions:

“We must resolutely defend national sovereignty, security and development interests;

“All efforts must be made to maintain Macao’s economic and social prosperity and stability;

“We must continue to consolidate the social and political foundation of patriotism and love of Macao.”

Fu said he hoped that everyone will continue to coordinate normal Covid-19 prevention and control measures and economic and social development and take the lead in promoting economic recovery. He said he also hoped that everyone will promote the core values of patriotism and love of Macao, emphasise unity, remain in the same boat through storms, and work together to build a broad social consensus in Macao.

Fu also praised the “strong leadership” of Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng during the Covid-19 crisis. He also said that most Macao compatriots are “sharing wealth and woe” and helping each other.

Ho vows to earnestly study Xi’s instructions for Macao

In his speech at the reception, which was attended by dozens of local community leaders, government officials and mainland officials posted to Macao, Ho promised that his government will earnestly study and implement the spirit and instructions of President Xi’s speeches during his inspection visit to Macao in December 2019.

Macao’s former chief executives Edmund Ho Hau Wah and Fernando Chui Sai On as well as Foreign Ministry Acting Commissioner Wang Dong attended the reception.
