The newly established Ieong Kong Youth Federation of Macau will try its best to boost co-operation between Macau and Yangjiang in aspects such as culture, education and economic development, Harry Lai Meng San, president of the group, said on Thursday.

‘Ieong Kong’ is Cantonese for Yangjiang, a city in south-western Guangdong.

Addressing the federation’s inauguration ceremony at Macau Tower, Lai, a member of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the federation was established under the guidance of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ), the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau and leading Yangjiang officials.

Lai also said his group “aims to respond to President Xi Jinping’s call to place special emphasis on the education and training of young people”.

Also addressing the ceremony, Ling Fengping, who heads the China Communist Youth League’s Yangjiang Municipal Committee, said she hoped the federation can actively contribute to the “friendly exchanges” between the young people of the two cities.

Local legislators Chan Meng Kam, Mak Soi Kun and Melinda Chan Mei Yi are the federation’s 35 honorary presidents.

Yangjiang has 2.4 million residents. The city is famous for its manufacturing of knives and production of “douchi”, a type of fermented and slated black soybean.
