A food safety group urged on Thursday the government to more closely monitor the operation of local online shops selling food items, amid the increasing popularity to order food online.
Philip Choi Shoi Meng, who heads the Macau Food Safety Management Association, made the suggestion on the sidelines of a food safety seminar, which was organised by the Vocational Skills Training Centre run by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions.
The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) recently launched a voluntary registration scheme for local owners running online shops selling any kind of food items. The bureau’s Food Safety Centre Director Cheong Kuai Tat said last week his centre was aware of the existence of some 50 such online shops in Macau, but only eight of them had registered so far.
Choi urged the government to get in touch with the unregistered owners and encourage them to register.
According to the Food Safety Centre website, one aim of the registration scheme is to enable more effective means of communication and notification between government and such online businesses in the event of any kind of food safety incidents, so that “they can trace the source and movement of food products in a timely and effective manner”.
