A total of 920 voters can cast their ballots in the legislature’s indirect by-election on November 24, Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission President Tong Hio Fong announced on Wednesday.
Tong, a judge by profession, made the announcement after a regular meeting of the government-appointed commission.
According to Tong, the registration of the voters representing associations from the industrial, commercial and financial sector ended last Thursday.
Tong told reporters after the meeting that the voters are not allowed to use mobile phones or similar devices in the polling stations.
According to the Macau Post Daily, Tong noted that the election campaign will run from November 9 to 22.
According to previous media reports, businessman Wang Sai Man is the sole candidate.
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Ho Iat Seng from the legislature earlier this year so that he could run for chief executive. Ho, who was the only candidate, will become Macau’s third chief executive on December 20, succeeding Fernando Chui Sai On who a decade ago succeeded Edmund Ho Hau Wah. Edmund Ho became the first chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) on December 20, 1999. As Edmund Ho and Chui each served two consecutive five-year terms, the maximum allowed by law, Ho Iat Seng will be Macau’s fifth-term chief executive. The Chinese characters of the surnames of Edmund Ho and Ho Iat Seng are different.
